AN EVENT has been held to celebrate York's mix of cultures and faiths.

The York Celebrates Difference event was held in St Sampson’s Square in York at the weekend, and encouraged residents, local organisations, students and visitors to engage with other people of all backgrounds to promote York as a tolerant and welcoming city.

More than 1,500 people took part in the event, with organisations including York St John University, University of York, City of York Council, Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Lazenby Brown and Make it York responsible for setting it up.

Professor Karen Stanton, Vice Chancellor of York St John University said: "This day gave us an opportunity to make our inclusivity and celebration of difference visible across the City and, as a values-led University community, we were delighted to be involved in creating this exciting and important initiative.

"We look forward to welcoming more of York’s businesses and residents to be part of a bigger and better event next year."
