RULES banning bikes from Selby parks are being overturned in the bid to make the town more cycle-friendly.

The district council is trying to change by-laws that govern Selby park, and Portholme Road, Leeds Road and Denison Road open spaces, so that cycling can be allowed.

The by-laws were adopted in 1899 and the council said the cycle bans were “outdated” and failed to represent the use of parks and open spaces in the modern age.

Cllr Richard Musgrave, the lead councillor for housing, leisure, health and culture, said: “Cycling is a growing activity in the district and we want to encourage as many people as possible to get out on a bike and lead healthier happier lives. The changes to the council’s park by-laws will allow more people to enjoy the public spaces on their bicycles.

“The district’s cycling legacy must be supported; year by year the Three Swans Sportive and the Tour de Yorkshire become more popular so it’s important that the district supports the growing sport. Changes like this will help support the district in becoming a more cycling friendly destination for both residents and for visitors.”

For the new by-laws to be implemented an application must now be approved by the Secretary of State.
