A SPECIAL event will take place in York this weekend, to encourage residents to try their hand at sewing and handicrafts.

Sew Saturday is a national initiative started by Sew Magazine, to support local fabric, craft and haberdashery shops, and York Makery, in Gillygate, will be encouraging customers to take part.

Kayleigh Oliver set up York Makery earlier this year, and said she hoped to see anyone who had ever thought about giving crafts a try.

She said: "This is our first year of involvement as its our first year in business, but we hope that it will encourage both experienced sewers and those who want to give it a try to pop down and see us.

"We will be running a free drop in make and take workshop between 10am and noon, where anyone who fancies it can come along, have a play on the sewing machines, and make a lovely monogram mini wall hanging to take home with them."

The shop will also run special offers throughout the day, and giveaways of free project ideas.

Kayleigh said: "We are hoping that lots of local craft enthusiasts will pop down and support us with our exciting event, and hopefully that we will set some new customers off on their sewing journey. Anyone and everyone is welcome, but its an excellent time to try sewing if you haven't before, or to stock up on fabrics in time for those pre-Christmas crafting sessions."
