VOTING is under way for the 2016 North Yorkshire Police Public Choice Awards.

The awards celebrate the work of officers who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in order to serve the public. This year’s nominees include the teams who dealt with the killing of Liam Miller, the death of nut allergy sufferer Paul Wilson, and those who saved two young girls from a suicide attempt.

The nominees include:

- Major Crime Unit (DI Shaun Page, DC Jamie Fairest, DS Andy Palmer, DC Jason Roper, FI Janine Mitchell, DS Chris Parker Beagrie and DS Lee Allenby).

Following the death of Paul Wilson - who had a serious nut allergy - in January 2014, the team spent two years investigating the takeaway which served the dish that killed him and said it was nut-free.

The case resulted in a guilty verdict of manslaughter, together with six food-safety offences, for takeaway owner Mohammed Zaman, who was jailed for six years. The investigation was unique in its nature and made legal history.

- PC Alex Gregory, PC David Ellison, PC Steven Harvey, PC Martin Scott, PC Gemma Churchward, PCSO Matthew Lewis and PCSO Stacey Taylor, York.

PCSOs Matthew Lewis and Stacey Taylor were among the first at the scene in Acomb, where Sam Donley had stabbed his friend Liam Miller and attacked a second man. PCSO Lewis gave CPR to Liam, while PCSO Taylor searched the area and gave medical assistance to the second victim.

PCs Gregory, Ellison, Harvey, Scott and Churchward arrived and found Donley, who was self harming, and used bodily force to subdue him before providing life-saving first aid.

- Detective Constable Chris Ryan, Selby.

Det Con Ryan tracked down Ashley Fulcher - who fled to Costa Rica after violently attacking three people in a pub in Selby, nearly blinding one.

Working with overseas justice agencies, Det Con Ryan negotiated Ryan’s deportation and brought him back to the UK where he was jailed for more than three years.

-PC Xavi Lopez, Harrogate.

PC Lopez helped a suicidal 14-year-old girl and her cousin, who were sitting on a railway bridge in Harrogate, grabbed them as a train approached, and pulled them both to safety.

The two girls’ combined weight exceeded his own, and he was putting his own safety in danger, but PC Lopez’s actions brought them back onto the bridge, saving them from serious injury.

-PCSOs Grenville Dowson, Louisa Warburton, Naomi Harris, Michelle Calpin, Colin Martin and Lucy Burgoyne, York.

On a busy race day in York in June, PCSO Dowson noticed smoke coming out of an upstairs window of a multi-occupancy house and all six entered the building to check for residents.

They stopped the fire spreading further, and while there were no human occupants, they rescued several pets and evacuated neighbouring properties until the fire service arrived.

All six suffered the effects of smoke inhalation, but remained on duty for the remainder of their shift to support policing at the races.
