A TEAM from City of York Council’s Register Office has raised £5,000 for York Hospital’s Special Care Baby Unit.

The money has been raised thanks to new parents in the city, as they are asked to donate £2 for a folder in which to keep their new baby’s birth certificate. Every penny of this goes towards the SCBU’s work with ill or premature babies.

The Register Office team, which also offers a bereavement service at York Hospital and attends three local Sure Start centres to register births, has raised over £25,000 in the last nine years.

Councillor Nigel Ayre said: “That residents often offer more than the suggested £2 and that our staff ceaselessly support this scheme, shows how keen everyone is to back SCBU and its vital work.”

Vikki Smith, Sister on the unit, said: “York Register Office has supported SCBU for many years and raised an incredible amount of money for the unit.

“Myself and all staff on the unit are so grateful for the continued support which allows us to provide the best care possible for babies and their families. This really is such a generous donation to SCBU and we cannot thank the team at York Register office enough.”
