THOUSANDS of people raised awareness of a debilitating disease by walking in the grounds of an historic estate.

The Alzheimer’s Society’s Leeds Memory Walk saw 3,500 people tackle a 2km or 6km walk around Temple Newsam.

Walkers were joined on the course by Emmerdale actor John Middleton, who plays a curate living with dementia, and Japan’s dementia campaigner Tomofumi Tanno, who was diagnosed at 39.

Brothers John and Ben Turner from Selby, pictured above, were among the participants.

Mr Middleton said: It’s overwhelming to see so many people walking together for a world without dementia - and underlines the massive impact the condition has on our community.

“It’s a privilege for me to take part in such a special day and more than ever shows the wonderful support there is for raising money for Alzheimer’s Society services and the charity’s research in the fight against the disease.”
