PARENTS who drive their children to school have been urged not to park irresponsibly.

A leaflet has been created by North Yorkshire Police entitled School Parking: Your Responsibility. It reminds parents not to create dangers to others while ensuring their children get to school safely.

It reminds parents that they must not stop on ‘Keep Clear’ markings close to school gates “even to drop off or pick up”, as “a stationary car can prevent a driver seeing a child crossing the road”.

It said: “Don’t be pressurised by bad weather into parking too close to the school - better a wet coat than a visit to A&E.”

Drivers are also reminded not to park on or near residents’ driveways, and said motorists who park on verges, grassland or pavements may be committing an act of obstruction as well as creating danger for crossing children.

Drivers parking on grassland could face action from the parish council.
