A GRANDMOTHER is attempting to raise £60,000 to treat a debilitating condition.

Angie Hill hopes to pull the five-figure sum together through a range of fundraising events and fly to Mexico for treatment she believes will stop her Multiple Sclerosis from becoming progressively worse as she gets older.

The 57-year-old, of Barwick Close, Selby, was first diagnosed with the illness - which is characterised by numbness and problems with balance - 16 years ago, but says she has suffered symptoms since she gave birth to her daughter 30 years ago.

She has been forced to give up work and feared for her health until she heard about the pioneering Hemapotetic Stem Cell Treatment (HSCT), which is only available in Mexico and Russia.

A similar treatment for Relapsing/Remitting MS is still under trial in Sheffield and London. However, there is no such medication for the Primary Progressive type of illness Ms Hill has.

She has pencilled in July 2017 to fly out to Mexico and undergo the therapy, but understands she has a long road ahead of her to raise the money, including £45,000 for the treatment and extra cash for flights and carers.

Ms Hill, who is mum to Kirsty, 30, and grandmother to five-year-old Reggie, said: “They are having astounding results but at the moment they won’t entertain treating the Primary Progressive type in this country because it is still under trial.

“I hope this will give me some sort quality of life back because the illness affects my life.

“I can organise to go out with friends for a meal but fatigue can hit me pretty quickly.

“I should be a different person after the treatment.”

Ms Hill has set up a website for online donations, but is planning to host a pamper day on October 8 and has other ideas lined up for fundraising, including a bike ride and a celebrity concert which is currently being planned.
