PLANS have been revealed for the new Tang Hall library that council bosses want to build at the old Burnholme Community College.

A new library has long been talked about as part of the redevelopment of the land, and now a full planning application has emerged.

Project bosses want to alter the existing school hall and entrance block, and demolish and rebuild other parts to create the new library facilities.

A design and access statement says the main hall should be retained as a landmark in the area, and is big enough to be used by local church groups. Two stairwell towers are also to stay, giving structural stability to the site, and a new two-storey glazed entrance block will go up.

The papers add: “The new extension will accommodate the Explore Library cafe area at ground floor level, together with kitchen facilities, music rooms and will also provide the new principal access to the main hall. At first floor level will be several large activity rooms and a suite of smaller meeting rooms (all available for booking by local community groups) and additional music practice rooms.”

The old school hall will also get a new multi-purpose room with a glazed screen overlooking the main hall, and the existing entrance foyer and offices will be opened up to accommodate Burnholme Nursery which will have access to a secure outside play area.

Last week, a separate planning application showed the unwanted old school buildings will be demolished, starting in November.

Meanwhile, other council papers reveal that Department of Education chiefs have given crucial consent for the school buildings to be disposed of, a significant milestone for the council’s ambitions.
