Harvest thanksgiving - There will be a harvest thanksgiving service on Sunday at 6pm in the Church of St John the Baptist.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Brownies- The 1st Brompton with Snainton Brownies has places available for girls from the age of seven. It runs a varied programme of both indoor and outdoor activities, meeting in the village hall between 6pm and 7.30pm on Mondays during term time. Quiz - The first quiz of the season was held last Friday in the village hall with quizmaster Bob Muir in charge. The winners were Anne and John Deehan with Stephen and Julia Spencer. There was a tie for second place. Anne Tidd, Sue Cook. Liz Eccles and Kath Carey prepared the supper and other preparations were carried out by members of the village hall committee.

Gardening trip –A minibus full of Brompton and District Gardening Club members and friends visited the Autumn Flower Show at Harrogate. It was the second such trip, the first being to Sledmere Walled Garden in July. Both trips were organised by club chairman Anne Deehan. The next meeting of the club is in the village hall on Wednesday, September 28 at 7.30pm when Paul Turner will talk about herbs and garlic.

All Saints - The harvest festival service at All Saints Church on Sunday starts at 6pm. There will be a hot supper in the village hall afterwards. Gifts of produce from parishioners will be kept to go to the Rainbow Centre, Scarborough, with contributions from the children of Brompton and Sawdon Primary School who have their harvest celebration in All Saints the following Wednesday. The Rainbow Centre in Scarborough is run alongside St Mary’s Church in Scarborough and supports those from the most disadvantaged part of the borough.

CROPTON

Village hall - Malton Male Voice Choir return to the village hall by on Friday, October 7 at 7.30pm. Admission is £4 to include tea and biscuits. There will be a raffle. For further information, or to reserve you seat, phone 01751 417692.

FARNDALE

Jumble sale – There will be a jumble sale in the village hall in Church Houses, from 2pm on Saturday. Any donations of clothes, soft toys, shoes etc. may be left in the hall on Friday.

HELMSLEY

Concert - Marske Fishermen’s Choir provided an evening of music and song in the chapel on Friday September 16. In conjunction with the Helmsley branch of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution it raised £600 which will be shared between the RNLI and chapel funds.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

New date - The give and take day which was to take place in October has now been re-arranged for Sunday, November 27. More details about the day will be published on a date nearer the event.

Ladies Fellowship – The group met for the first time since the summer outing to see the gardens at Sleightholmedale Lodge. Helen Robertshaw opened the meeting with a prayer for each new day. The speaker for the evening was Cath Nicholson’s daughter, Amy, who is deputy manager in a residential care home in Pickering. She spoke about how she started work in the elderly care sector straight from school as a domestic and worked her way up to her current position. She gave a lot of useful information about power of attorney. Birthdays in September were celebrated by Jeanne Binns, Andrea Cooper, Eleanor Harrison, Margery Roberts, Kathy Robson and Jean Sherman. Audrey Bell celebrates her birthday in early October. The next meeting is on Wednesday, October 12 at 7.30pm in the library when entertainment will be provided by three of the fellowship’s members.

Camera club - Adrian White from Leeds Audio Visual Group was the speaker at a recent meeting. The Hazlehurst competition will be held on Thursday, October 6 Open Show - Kirkbymoorside Horticultural Society Open Show is being held on Saturday in the Memorial Hall. Entries can be taken the evening before the show and on show day up to 10.30am. All exhibits are to be staged by 11am. The show opens to the public at 2pm. Trophies will presented at 4.30pm. There are 127 classes. Coffee morning - The coffee morning held at the West Lund lane home of Dorothy Collis raised £255 for Macmillan Cancer Support. The organisers would like to thank everyone who provided baking and supported the event.

Treasurer needed - All Saints’ Church is looking for a volunteer treasurer to take over the upkeep of the church accounts from December. If anyone would like further details, they should phone the vicar on 01751 431452. The Parochial Church Council has a meeting in church on Monday at 7.30pm. The harvest festival is on Sunday at 10.15am. The following evening, Monday, September 26, the harvest supper will be held at the bowling club at 7pm. People wanting to attend should add their name to the list in church.

Domino drive – The Kirkbymoorside support group for St Catherine’s Hospice will host a domino drive at Manor Close centre today (Wednesday) at 7.30pm.

Tuesday Group – The meeting in the Methodist Church’s Jubilee room on Tuesday, September 27 will be an evening of music with Four Quarters. The leader is Gillan and the tea hostesses will be Janet and Dorothy. The Tuesday group is open to all and aims to provide a meeting place where Christian responsibility at home, in the community and in church life is encouraged.

KIRKDALE

Quiz - The summer quiz on film titles in aid of St Gregory’s Minster and St Hilda’s, Beadlam has raised nearly £200 for the churches despite selling rather fewer copies than last year’s quiz. It also had fewer completed quizzes returned. Sarah Evans of Pembrey, Wales, was the winner. Second was Mrs C Thompson, of Kilburn, and third Lib Pennock, also of Kilburn. There will be a Christmas quiz in December.

LEAVENING

Harvest festival - The harvest festival service will be held in church on Sunday at 10.30am. The harvest auction will be on Saturday, October 1 at 8pm in the Jolly Farmer pub. There will be lots of harvest produce up for sale, together with home baking. Donations of items to be sold can be taken to either of the church harvest festivals in Leavening or Acklam, or taken to the Jolly Farmer on auction night.

MALTON

Luncheon Club - Malton Ladies Luncheon Club met on Thursday, September 15 at the Forest & Vale Hotel, Pickering, after a two-month break. Entertainment was provided by Frank Flaherty with Tales of an Irish Innkeeper. John Hazelwood will speak about the work of the Samaritans at the October meeting. NAWTON

Fun night – Villagers are invited to support its local cricket club at with a fun night and presentation evening at the Rose and Crown on Saturday. The evening starts with a barbecue from 5.30pm with the cricket presentations beginning at 7pm followed by a race night at 7.30pm.

Club draw - The August draw for the Beckett Recreation Ground 100 Club draw winners £50 was won by the Howells family (ticket no 83) who receive £50. Other winners were £30, J Nutter (60); £10 Debbie Swift (1) and Emma Dodsworth (101).

Bingo – There will be a prize bingo in the village hall on Saturday, October 1 at 7.30pm. It is in aid of hall funds Domino drive -There will be a domino drive in the village hall on Saturday to raise funds for the hall funds.

NEWTON-UPON-RAWCLIFFE

Charity show - The annual charity show held at Lydds Farm, Yatts, by permission of Mr J Jacklin and family, was held on Sunday, September 11 and raised the £1,177 for St Leonard’s Hospice, Care at Home.

Social evening - Ros Lilley a volunteer with the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust will present an illustrated talk on the trust’s role in maintaining Habitat in Yorkshire Wildlife in the village hall tomorrow (Thursday) at 7.30pm. Admission is £3 which includes coffee or tea and biscuits.

OLD MALTON

Musical evening - St Mary’s Priory Old Malton Ladies Fellowship’s September meeting took the form of a musical evening provided by Janet and Gordon Hindle. Janet spoke about starting to play the piano before learning to play the flute and the ukulele. Gordon talked about playing the recorder and the ukulele. Members joined in some songs and heard of the many societies nationwide who play the ukulele. After tea, the harvest festival and the Christmas fair were discussed. The competition was won by Janet Tonge. The next meeting will be on Thursday, October 13. New members are welcome.

PICKERING

Musical memories - Potter Hill Methodist Church will stage a fun folk musical memories evening on Saturday at 7.30pm. Admission is free. During the interval there will be refreshments available. Donations will be accepted for the church building projects fund during the evening.

Quiz - There will be a general knowledge quiz evening at the Bay Horse Inn, Market Place, on Sunday at 7.30pm.

Anniversary - The 50th anniversary of the Tuesday Group, formerly known as the Pickering Young Wives Group is to be celebrated on Tuesday, September 27. The current members would like all members, past and present, to join in the celebrations in the Methodist Church Rooms, Potter Hill, at 7pm. Domino drive - Pickering Cricket Club will hold a domino drive on Thursday, September 29 at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, at 7.30pm.

Fishkeepers - Ryedale Aquarist Society met in the Memorial Hall last week when David Armitage of the NEYGBKA gave a talk entitled, Collecting Labyrinth Fishes in Southern Myanmar. The table show competition was won by David Gamble with a Paskai Killie. The next meeting will be held in Memorial Hall on Wednesday, October 5, at 7.30pm when Dr David Pool of Fish Science Fish Foods, will be the speaker.

Ryedale Shopper – There will be a tripto Scarborough tomorrow (Thursday) costing £5. Future journeys include Thursday, October 8 to Whitby, £5; Wednesday, October 19 to Northallerton, £6; Thursday, November 3 to Monks Cross, York, £5; and Thursday, November 17 to Beverley, £6. RILLINGTON

Ladies Guild - Sixteen members attended the September meeting of Rillington and District Ladies Guild in Woodlands Community Centre. Caroline Neuff introduced Roger Sutton and Mollie from Pocklington Rotary Club. Roger gave an talk on Shelter Boxes. Shelter was a Rotary charity that started after the Tsunami in 2000. The shelter boxes which are packed in Truro, Cornwall, are large green plastic boxes containing survival equipment including pots, pans, stove, tools and a pack for children. Depending on the type of disaster there are boxes that contain tents for up to 10 people, thermal blankets and ground sheets with volunteers helping erect the tents. Valerie Gilbert thanked Roger and Mollie for their talk. The evening’s hostesses were Caroline Neuff and Mollie Tindall. Judy Duke sold tickets for the raffle. At the October meeting, Philip Richardson will give a talk called Keeping the Cold War Cold.

Whist drives - Eric Copeland presented the prizes at a progressive whist drive held in Woodlands Community Centre. A whist drive was also held at the Over Sixty’s Club in the village hall. A raffle was held at both events.

Fundraiser - Ivy Wilson is having a fundraising day for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance at her home, at 32 Low Moorgate tomorrow (Thursday). Coffee will be served from 10am to noon and afternoon teas from 2pm to 4pm both with a selection of homemade cakes and scones.

Quiz - Mike Williams will be hosting a general knowledge quiz in the Fleece Inn on Friday from 9pm.

Live music - Julia and Dave will be performing live music, including songs from 60s to present day, covering a wide range of genres in the Fleece Inn on Saturday from 9.30pm.

Coffee morning - The Buckrose Community Café will be raising funds for MacMillan Cancer Support at its weekly coffee morning in the church rooms on Tuesday, September 27 between 8.45am and 11.30am.

Bingo - A prize bingo session will be held in Woodlands Community Centre on Wednesday, September 28 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Doors open 6.45pm with eyes down at 7.15pm. Donations of prizes would be welcome and can be left at the centre.

SEAMER

Methodists - The harvest festival service at the Methodist Church on Sunday was taken by Rev Denise Free. The organist was Doreen Lawson, the vestry steward was Jan Blower and the welcomer was Margaret Harris. Margaret Neave took the collection. The church was decorated with fruit and vegetables flowing from a cornucopia with a display of the many various talents of the congregation. Everyone took part in one way or another and this included drama, Singing for Fun Group, soloists, bible reading and prayers written and read by members of the congregation. The harvest lunch was prepared and served by the ladies of the chapel. Donations for the lunch came to £150 which is to be sent to Margaret Storry to help with her work in Nicaragua. A good harvest of tins was collected and this is to be sent to the Rainbow Centre. The preacher at the next Sunday service at 10.30am is Rev Robert Whitfield. The Dalesmen concert is on Saturday at 7.30pm. Entry is £6 to include a light supper. The knit and natter group will meet tomorrow (Thursday) at 2pm. This is open to anyone, you don’t have to knit, just come and natter and have a cup of tea.

St Martin’s - The Rev Liz Kitching took both morning services and gave a talk about the many different ways available to us when we pray for ourselves or for others. At the 9.30am communion service, Kieron Middleton read and assisted with the chalice and Kate Middleton led the intercessions. Edna Burton accompanied the hymns. The sidespeople were Jim and Marion Baird, and Enid Plevey and Julie Stephenson served refreshments between the services. At the 11am service of modern worship, Jean Fiedler read and Mary Otway led the intercessions. The sung worship was led by Steve Raettig (keyboard) with Richard Fuller (guitar), John and Sue Grice (guitar and bass) and John Taylor (drums). Liz Cremer ran the Sunday club with Chris Bray, the sidesperson was Jo Taylor and Wendy Haslam served refreshments after the service.

SHERBURN

Letters draw - The letters drawn in Saturday’s Sherburn FC draw were H I R. As there was no winner the prize fund next week will be £120.

Coffee morning - The biggest coffee morning in the world event for Macmillan Cancer Support will be held in the village hall on Saturday from 10am to noon. There will be several stalls, a prize draw, bottle tombola and cakes.

Fancy dress disco - There will be an 80s fancy dress disco night with Dave Marshall at the Community & Sports Club on Saturday, October 8 from 8pm. Entry is free.

Communion - The next service at St Hilda’s will be Holy Communion led by Rev Joe Kinsella on Sunday at 9am.

Methodists – The Tuesday coffee morning donations continue to support the Christmas shoebox appeal. The Rev Elizabeth Clark, the National Rural Officer, and her husband, Norman, led the harvest thanksgiving services. Celebrations began on Saturday afternoon when she spoke about her work to encourage the small rural churches. Tea and cake were enjoyed afterwards. Worship continued on Sunday morning when the Rainbows and Brownies were welcomed. The church had been decorated and the gifts of food will be given to Westway Open Arms food bank at Eastfield. The service was followed by lunch in the hall. Worship on Sunday at 10.30am will be led by Bruce Clark.

SLINGSBY

Harvest festival - The united harvest festival will be held in the Methodist Church on Sunday at 10.30am. The service will be led by the Rev Ben Nicholson from Helmsley. The chapel will be decorated with harvest produce. Gifts of non-perishable food will be sent to the local food bank at 1.30pm on Saturday. After the service there will be a harvest lunch in the schoolroom.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge club - The duplicate competition held on Monday, September 12 was won by Tim Johnson and Enid Watson with 59.3 per cent. In second place were Angela Smith and Audrey Shaw with 54.2 per cent.

WEAVERTHORPE

Jumble sale – There will be a jumble sale in the village hall on Saturday, October 1, from 1pm to 2.30pm. Admission is £1 for adults and includes a drink and biscuits. Accompanied children get free entry. Jumble can be donated from 11.30am but electrical items cannot be accepted. Proceeds from the event will be divided between village organisations. For further information, phone Sue Thomson on 01944 738804 WOMBLETON Scrufts - Wombleton Sports and Recreation Club’s Scrufts dog show raised about £300 for improvements to the pavilion. The judges were Nigel Stock and Stephanie Myers. The committee are hoping it will become an annual event. The first prize winners were as follows - most handsome male: Lincoln (shown by Heather Thirkell), prettiest female: Sophie (Millie-Anne Foster and Lilly Foster), most like owner: Merry (Grace Walker), most obedient: Fizz (Phoebe Gurling), best rescue dog: Millie (Lesley Shields), waggiest tail: Teal (Caroline Shepherd) and obstacle course: Elsa (Grace Walker).

Harvest supper - The harvest supper and auction will take place on Friday in the village hall. Entry is £1 for adults, but free for children. Drinks and a pie and peas supper will be available to purchase on the night for £4. Donations for the harvest auction would be greatly appreciated and should be given to any committee member or left at the hall between 4pm and 5pm on the day of the auction

WI REPORT

Kirkbymoorside - President Chris Martin welcomed 16 members and two guests to the latest meeting. After the business meeting, the competition was won by Ruth Lomas, with Alwyne Thorpe second and Molly Stephens third. The planned speaker was unable to attend, so members were grateful to Christine Field who gave an insight into the pictures we choose to have in our homes, why we like them and how they reflect our personalities and lives. Members brought in their own pictures. Birthday posies made by Jan Tattersall were presented to Jean Sherman and Jeanne Binns. In the absence of Jeanne, her posy was given to Christine Field. Members had enjoyed a garden party at the home of Carol Smith in August. Three members had attended courses at Denman College and Sue Sloan was particularly pleased with her first visit and had made three items of silver jewellery. Members are looking forward to a visit to the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough. The monthly craft and chat session at the Penny Bank was scheduled for yesterday (Tuesday). The next meeting will be held on Monday, October 3 when William Watts give a talk called Hidden Horizons of the Yorkshire Coast. The branch will meet in the Methodist schoolroom for the rest of this year and all next year. For information, phone Chris on 01751 431572.

YCA REPORTS

Rillington and District - Ten members were present at the September meeting of Rillington and District Yorkshire Countrywomen's Association held in the village hall. The secretary informed members of the death of two former members Pauline Gordon and Hazel Grayson.

Andre Brown, Steve Hayton and Annie Wilson, accompanied by team rescue dog Zee, gave a talk on the work of Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue. Formed in 1965, the branch of the service has 50 members and is based in Snainton. It covers 2,200 square miles but in the event of emergencies can be called to other parts of the country especially to deal with flooding. The membership is made up entirely of volunteers from all walks of life who rely on donations and sponsorship. The talk was followed by a demonstration of some of their equipment used in rescues with Tracey Ireland volunteering as a ‘victim’. Heather Thornes gave the vote of thanks. Steve judged the competition for four savoury biscuits and awarded first prize to Sue Butler and second to Babs Buckley. The September newsletter had been circulated to all members with several items brought to the notice of members. The evening’s hostesses were Babs Buckley and Louise Tindall. Marjorie Grice sold tickets for the raffle. The October meeting to which members of Sherburn and Weaverthorpe branches have been invited will include the Mell supper with musical entertainment by Four Quarters. A closing collection raised £40 for Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue.

Sherburn - The chairman welcomed 29 members to the meeting on Wednesday, September 14. Apologies were given by three members. The speaker was Jonathan Botham who gave a talk called Elizabeth Botham and the Story of her Bakery. Elizabeth was Jonathan’s great grandmother. The vote of thanks was given by Angela Holdsworth. Minutes of the June meeting were read and approved. The chairman thanked Pat Woodley for organising the summer outing. Ideas were put forward for the Christmas dinner. The competition for a chocolate cake was won by Barbara Grice. The next meeting is on Wednesday, October 12 when the speaker will be Jason Butterfield, a fire safety officer. The competition is a photo of someone in uniform.
