UNDERGRADUATES at the University of York face the lowest crime rate in Yorkshire and Humberside, according to a national higher education establishment guide.

The Complete University Guide gives the university a rate of 15.96 crimes per 1,000 residents, based on the number of burglaries, robberies and sexual offences in the areas where its students live during term time.

The highest rate in the region is 58.50 per 1,000 residents for students at the University of Bradford, which also has the highest regional sexual offences rate.

However, the crime rate for areas where University of York St John students live is ranked fifth highest at 42.49 per 1,000 residents out of the regions’ 11 higher education institutions. York St John, does have the second lowest robbery rate of 0.90 per 1,000 residents.

The University of York has the lowest rate for all three categories - 0.23 for robbery, 4.42 for burglary and 11.32 for sexual offences. The average in England and Wales for each category is 36.5.
