Several police vehicles and an ambulance have been at a house in Hartoft Street, near Fishergate.

A man in his 30s has suffered knife wounds. He was taken to York Hospital and has now been transferred to Leeds General Infirmary.

A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "His condition is described as serious but stable. Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident."

She had said earlier: "Police were called by the ambulance service at around 9.45am today, with reports that a man had suffered injuries from a bladed weapon.

"The incident happened at a property in Hartoft Street, York.

One local witness told The Press there were numerous police cars at the street and said he had seen an officer carrying a bloodied bag.

Local resident Ron Brackenbury said the first he knew anything was wrong was when blue flashing lights from emergency vehicles appeared in the street.

"It's usually a very quiet street," he added.

Another resident, Roy Lambert, said a young man and a woman, perhaps in their early 20s, lived at the house.

There have been at least five emergency service vehicles in the street, including an ambulance, and another three police cars and vans parked in rosedale street, at the end of Hartoft Street nearest Fishergate.

A police officer at the entrance to Hartoft Street had been barring access to the street.

An ambulance left the scene a short while ago and the road has re-opened.

The incident happened just along the street from the childhood home of comic legend Frankie Howerd, where a blue plaque was installed a few weeks ago by York Civic Trust.
