CYCLISTS are still needed to take part in a fundraising event in York to help improve life for the victims of domestic abuse.

The Independent Domestic Abuse Service (IDAS) bike ride is raising money for the charity, which helps support victims of domestic abuse around the city. Organisers hope to have 100 cyclists take part in the event.

In recent years, the sponsored cycle - which includes three routes of 20, 40 and 70-miles setting off from York’s Millennium Bridge - has helped raise £12,000 for the charity.

The event is one of the charity’s most important fundraising events of the year, and participants confirmed for this year’s event include a unicyclist, tandems and cyclists in fancy dress.

Sarah Hill, chief executive officer of IDAS, said the charity had already signed up 50 cyclists to take part in the event, and encouraged anyone who wanted to take part to get in touch.

She said: “This sponsored cycle ride ensures we can continue to support local victims of abuse who urgently need our help 365 days of the year. By joining our team of cyclists you will make a direct difference to improving a child or young person’s life and have a great time taking part in the friendliest cycle ride ever.

“Whether you are a cycling fanatic or your bike has been sitting unused for years, IDAS are encouraging everyone to get involved with ‘the friendliest cycle ride in North Yorkshire’ The money raised will be used to help support local children and young people who’ve lived with domestic violence and help families living in our refuges.”

The bike ride also aims to raise awareness of the hundreds of local children who are experiencing abuse at home, and Sarah said all donations would make a difference. She said: “Any amount, no matter how small, is important to IDAS.

“Even £5 can help pay for an emergency pack for a family entering the refuge and £10 enables a child to receive an advocacy or counselling session to help them recover. “ This year’s event takes place on Saturday, September 17.
