A TEAM of 15 volunteers are determined to complete a 15-metre long tapestry telling the story of the Battle of Stamford Bridge as a tribute to the project’s brainchild.
The tapestry will consist of 15 one-metre hand-stitched panels, including 12 about the battle, and three with details about the tapestry itself.
The project, launched at the annual Battle of Stamford Bridge Show last September, was the idea of the Battle of Stamford Bridge Society’s co-founder Tom Wyles, who died in February.
Heather Cawte, a volunteer, said: “We are dedicating the whole project in his memory, and we’re even more determined to complete it now.”
The tapestry is the missing link in the story of 1066 and closes the gap between the existing Bayeux and Fulford tapestries.
This year’s Battle of Stamford Bridge Show is on September 24 and 25 in the village, and marks the 950th anniversary of the battle.
