AN HISTORIC church in York city centre has been handed £49,900 to help fund urgent roof repairs.
Central Methodist Church in St Saviourgate received the grant from the Government-funded Listed Places of Worship: Roof Repair Fund.
Project manager Richard Ramsden said it would meet just over half of the costs of the project at the Grade II* listed chapel, hopefully making the roof water tight and preventing further damage.
“At the same time, the ornate ceiling will be strengthened to preserve it for future generations,” he said.
He added that the church had invested more than £200,000 of its own funds in conserving and adapting the church and ancillary buildings for the continuing benefit of the community and had hosted schools, choirs, tourist attractions, charities and businesses, and the work would widen the possibilities for new activities.
