A FIXTURE of Selby’s cultural events will end this year, after more than three decades. The Cawood Craft Festival has been run in the village for 34 years, but this year’s event - over the Bank Holiday weekend - will be the last, organisers have confirmed.

David Jones, chairman of the festival, said the decision to stop holding the event was disappointing but unavoidable.

He said: “The craft festival has grown and developed significantly to become the major event it is today. However, following the retirement of the Rev Ian Ellery, there is now the uncertainty of using the vicarage grounds for any future event.

York Press:

"It is therefore with great regret, that this year will be the last Cawood Craft Festival, certainly in its present form. We have looked at other possible venues, but feel that non are suitable and secure for this three-day event. We need to plan year on year and this is not possible.”

Mr Jones said organisers had looked at other potential sites around the village, but because of location, security and the amenities required, it had not been possible to find an alternative.

He said: “In its time, the festival has raised thousands of pounds for the church and other charities and organisations. I would like to thank our visitors for supporting us over many years.

"I would also like to thank the committee, past and present, the stall holders and craft workers, and the many village people that have helped in any way over the years to put on this great event. Their hard work is much appreciated.”
