TRADERS are planning to give Acomb some extra festive sparkle at Christmas with plans to install festoon lighting in the main shopping areas.

Acomb Alive, a traders’ association formed in 2012 by local businesswoman Sue Hunter and City of York Council member Andrew Waller to regenerate the area and boost trade, says it wants to generate some additional festive Christmas cheer.

The organisation has so far raised £330 towards its fundraising target of £6,639 after 16 backers came forward.

People have hailed the idea, with one commenting online: “Fantastic project, please back it. Let’s get Acomb looking fabulous this Christmas!”

Another posted the comment: “Good luck everyone!

“The Christmas tree has been a great success in recent years but more can be achieved if we all support this valuable project in a modest way.”

A spokesperson for Acomb Alive said it had already been involved for the last few years in the installation of small illuminated Christmas trees outside local shops to create a festive atmosphere.

It had also funded a large Christmas tree outside the Gateway centre and it now wanted to improve the area further with the new lighting.

“Festoon lighting will add to the atmosphere in Acomb, at Christmas time, and be the perfect backdrop for local events that bring the community together,” said a spokesperson.

“This in turn will attract shoppers to the local area and boost the local economy.

“Since 2012, the area has gone from strength to strength with Acomb Alive holding events to attract people to the area.

“These include indoor fairs, markets, fun days, table top sales, and the annual pancake race.

“Acomb Alive raises funds independently, by running tombola’s, holding social events, such as pig racing and participating in bag packing at the local Morrisons Store.

“The funds raised all go towards regeneration in the area.”
