A LIVE question and answer session will be held in York tomorrow, to accompany the screening of a special documentary.

The Confession is a film about former Guantanamo detainee Moazzam Begg, directed by Ashish Ghadiali. Both will attend City Screen to talk with the audience about the screening.

Moazzam Begg was arrested by police in Pakistan and was imprisoned in Bagram and Guantanamo for more than three years before he was released without charge.

Dave Taylor, who is currently Lord Mayor of York and marketing manager of City Screen, has met Mr Begg and his father on a number of occasions previously, and was looking forward to the screening this week.

He said: “Moazzam Begg has spoken at both of York’s universities about his time in Guantanamo Bay.

“So I’m quite pleased City Screen is able to show this documentary and we have not only Mr Begg himself, but also the director, to speak to the audience.

“He was taken to Bagram then Guantanamo and detained there for three years before being released without charge, and we will be able to hear from him firsthand about that, which is a real advantage.”

The film was commissioned by the British Film Institute and the BBC for its Storyville programme, and is a first-hand account of the rise of the modern jihad, the War on Terror, and the reaction of the West to the global situation.

It has had positive reviews and been screened at film festivals, and Mr Ghadiali and Mr Begg are touring five cinemas in the UK this week to discuss the film as part of a short Q&A tour.

Dave said: “It’s quite a coup for City Screen, and great that we’ve been able to attract a director to speak about their films, and when that’s enhanced by the subject of the film coming as well, it makes it all the more exciting.”

The Confession is rated 15 and starts at 8.30pm. Plans are already under way for the next director Q&A, which will take place next month.

Dave said: “The next talk we have coming up is on September 7 and on a wildly different topic.

“We will have one of the directors of Android In La La Land, a documentary about Gary Numan, and how he got his head together after some years of crisis.”

Tickets are available from the box office in Coney Street, online picturehouses.com/cinema/York_Picturehouse. They can also be bought on the door.
