A MAJOR makeover is planned for a York shopping park, with 100 new jobs in the pipeline and a new retailer due to open its doors.

The scheme to transform Monks Cross Shopping Park over the coming two to three years will involve creating an updated facade, said to be “in line with the new Primark store, which will give the shopping park a contemporary and stylish new appearance”.

Car parking facilities are due to be improved, along with traffic circulation and public pathways, while the landscaping will also be upgraded, with more trees planted and existing ones being protected.

In addition, there are to be about 100 job vacancies as a ‘major new retailer’ is due to open at the park, along with new catering facilities and a ‘street scene’ section.

More details of the development are due to be revealed later in the week.

Katherine Sharp, centre manager, said: “We are really excited about the refurbishment and transformation that Monks Cross will undergo over the next few years.

“We are especially confident that our customers will love the new look and appreciate the new facilities that we will have to offer.”

Eric Hall, director of property company TDH Estates, said: “We are in the final stages of planning for the new and improved retail destination.

“We are looking forward to getting to the final stages of development when everyone can see it finally coming together.”

The Primark at Monks Cross Shopping Park opened in May this year, when more than 500 people queued to get the first glimpse of the new store. It employs 277 people and has 57,600 square feet of retail space.
