THOUSANDS of film, comic book and sci-fi enthusiasts are set to visit York later this month.

York Unleashed will take place at York Racecourse on Sunday, August 28, and will include stars of the big and small screen, along with authors, artists and stalls with books, toys and collectables for sale.

The convention was held at the racecourse for the first time last year, and saw about 3,000 people visit the event, many in costume as their favourite characters.

Lee Hunter, who organised the event, said: “The celebrities will be present all day to meet and greet fans, pose for photographs, and sign autographs.

“This year’s guests include Star Wars actor Jeremy Bulloch who played the unforgettable character Boba Fett.

“He’s joined by fellow Star Wars actress Femi Taylor. Sylvester McCoy, the seventh Doctor Who, and his companion Ace, played by Sophie Aldred, will also be in attendance.”

York Press:

This year’s event promises more than a hundred trading stalls, covering “a huge variety of geeky themes”, from sci-fi, anime and fantasy to toys, games, jewellery and handmade crafts.

Authors from the horror, supernatural and sci-fi genres will also be at the event, with books to sign and sell, and activities will also include events for visitors of all ages.

Fans of Game Of Thrones can meet a miniature direwolf, while Star Wars fans can take part in a lightsaber training school.

Professional costumers will hold exhibitions and fashion shows, and there will be a competition throughout the day for the most impressive visitor’s costume.

Lee said: “A staple at all Unleashed events is the costume competition for convention-goers who enjoy getting involved in optional cosplay-wearing.

“It’s a chance to win some fantastic prizes, and an opportunity for people of all ages to get involved and have some fun.”
