MANY of the country’s most skilled working dogs were in action today (Friday August 5) at the opening of the English National Sheepdog Trials.

Large crowds enjoyed the bright weather to watch the talented canines put through their paces in the magnificent surroundings of the Castle Howard estate, near Malton.

The trials have returned to North Yorkshire for the first time in nine years and the 150 competitors are all hoping to be crowned national champion at the end of the three-day extravaganza.

The dogs and their handlers, from across the country, are competing to win one of 15 places in the national team – and them go on to represent England at international level.

The trials run from 7.30am to 7.30pm each day, with the English National Champion 2016 title being awarded on Sunday.

Admission to the sheepdog trials is free for those visiting Castle Howard house and grounds, which open from 9.30am.

To visit the trials only, access is via the estate village of Coneysthorpe. Event only tickets cost £5 for adults and are free for under 16s.
