THOUSANDS of people flocked to see Oasis legend Noel Gallagher and his High Flying Birds rock the stage at Scarborough's Open Air Theatre on Wednesday.

It was a huge event for the East Coast resort, and proved to be arguably the venue's best gig in recent memory. The band wowed the crowd with a two-hour set, featuring most of their material from their two critically-acclaimed albums, complemented by several Oasis mega-hits, much to everyone's delight.

Since reopening, the venue has played host to some of the music industry's biggest stars, including Elton John and Tom Jones, but securing Noel Gallagher and his band is a major coup, that will last long in the memory of the audience who packed out the Open Air Theatre.

I had high expectations before the gig, but I was hoping the band would throw in a few Oasis tracks, and I wasn't disappointed.

Champagne Supernova, Half The World Away and even Wonderwall all featured on the set list, with the latter played during the encore.

I only recently bought a copy of Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds second album, and before that I'd only heard a few of the band's singles. I was pleasantly surprised how strong the album was, and having heard them perform most of their tracks from their self-titled first album, I'd say that was just as solid, if not better.

When you combine the band's most notable singles, including The Death Of You And Me, If I Had A Gun and Riverman, and mix these with classic Oasis tracks, the event was never going to disappoint.

The crowd appeared to thoroughly enjoy themselves, with lots of singing and arm waving, and there was even a little bit of crowd surfing, which is always a positive sign at any rock gig.

Mancunian Noel enjoyed some good banter with the audience, and his tongue-in-cheek jokes about Yorkshire folk and performing in the county drew laughter from the large crowd, and was met by chants of "Yorkshire", which echoed around the venue.

It was a sensational evening of entertainment with a rock'n'roll star, and having never visited the Open Air Theatre before, I was impressed with the venue and its staff who were more than helpful.
