A TEENAGE boy has been arrested and a man is in a serious condition in hospital following a robbery in York.

North Yorkshire Police said the 35-year-old victim was attacked and suffered a serious head injury in Mill Street, between Piccadilly and George Street, next to the Tramways Club.

The incident happened at between 6.40pm and 7pm on Friday. The victim was taken to Leeds General Infirmary, where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

A blue forensic tent and police cordon have been put up next to the Tramways Club, and the roads were partially closed for much of Saturday.

York Press:

Lesley Jones, who lives in Trafalgar House in Piccadilly, told The Press she had seen officers arrive last night, and a number of items in the road.

She said: "I witnessed a series of parcels in the middle of the road, mainly wrapped in green plastic, the largest to be approximately four feet long.

"I then saw the police van arrive, through the cordon and an officer erected what looks like a blue forensic tent. There was a lot of activity at approx 11.30pm with many more officers and plain clothes CID in the street."

Andy Brayshaw runs the Tramways Club, and was unable to leave the building for much of Saturday while police carried out their investigation outside.

He had been in Doncaster watching rugby last night, but when he returned to York, discovered the police cordon.

Mr Brayshaw said: "Police haven't really said anything, just an incident happened round the corner and I'm not allowed to cross the line unti lit's been taken away and they've finished their enquiries.

"I don't think it's anything to be concerned about. I can't recall anything like this happening in the 11 years I've been here, but it is strange. I haven't heard anything about the guy, but I don't think he's a regular."

Police said a 15-year-old York boy had been arrested in connection with the robbery, and remained in police custody throughout Saturday.

A spokeswoman has tonight confirmed the boy has been released on bail while enquiries continue.

Officers want to speak to anyone who saw a group of youths in the area on Friday.
