A WOMAN was airlifted to hospital following a serious crash in North Yorkshire.

North Yorkshire Police, Fire Service and the Yorkshire Ambulance Service were called to the scene of the crash, which police said happened at just before 3pm and involved "several vehicles", on the southbound carriageway of the A1M.

Fire crews from Boroughbridge, Harrogate and Ripon attended the two-vehicle crash and said a woman was trapped in one of the vehicles by her injuries.

Crews removed the roof of the vehicle using hydraulic cutting equipment and removed two dogs which were also in the vehicle to a place of safety.

The road was closed near junction 48 while emergency services dealt with the crash, and a police spokesman said a woman was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary with suspected spinal injuries.
