AS WE reported in The Press last week, a collection of about 1,000 York historical postcards will be going on sale to the highest bidder in an auction in Malton on Wednesday.
The cards belonged to an anonymous private collector. Auctioneers Boulton & Cooper will be putting them under the hammer.
The auctioneer agreed to let us use a small selection of the cards ... and here they are.
The collection is contained in nine separate themed albums. It includes Military Sunday events and military tattoos; well-known York streets and landmarks; and village scenes.
We have included a fairly random selection here, to give you an idea of the range of the postcards which will be up for sale.
One of our favourites is the picture of the horse drawn tram standing outside the Plough Inn in Fulford (top). We also love the aerial view of the new Tang Hall estate when it was only a fraction of the size it is today (below).

John McKay, auctioneers' assistant at Boulton & Cooper, says the collection includes some 'really unusual postcards that we have never seen before'.
The auction takes place in the Milton Rooms in Malton Market Place from 10am on Wednesday. If you'd like to see the collection first, there is a viewing day tomorrow (Tuesday) from 9am.
Anyone wishing to bid must register first, either on the day or in advance by phoning 01653 696151.
Petergate, date unknown but possibly the 1940s judging by the cars...
