AN EVENT to promote peace and celebrate diversity and multiculturalism was held in York on Saturday.
A Picnic for Peace took place on Saturday at Millennium Fields, next to the Millennium Bridge, in response to what the organisers called "post-Brexit negativity”. It follows similar events in Lewisham and London.
More than 100 people turned out for the event and brought along picnics, bunting and banners.
One of the organisers, Jemima Tulloch, said: “It was a really positive day. People turned out and we set up some activities for children.
The chairman of York Mosque, Mebs Surve, came down with his family. They shared some home-made curry with us.”
She added: “We wanted to celebrate the diversity and multiculturalism in York and bring the community together.”
Among the activities for children were painting and football.
