YORK City manager Jackie McNamara hopes to secure the services of former Watford goalkeeper Luke Simpson.

Simpson, 21, impressed on trial for the Minstermen in Saturday's pre-season friendly defeat against Bolton Wanderers.

McNamara has been looking for a goalkeeper to challenge Scott Flinders since Michael Ingham rejected a new deal and quit Bootham Crescent at the start of the summer.

Simpson, who was born in Manchester, started his career at Oldham Athletic and spent the last 12 months at Premier League Watford.

He has also been on loan at Leicester City but his only experience of first team football came at Workington and Accrington Stanley.

"We have looked at a few goalkeepers but it's important to get the right one - and Luke looks a good goalkeeper," said McNamara. "We will look at it and see if there is anything to be done over the next few days."

Simpson played just over an hour in Saturday's 2-0 defeat and caught the eye with a stunning second half save to block a close range header from Max Clayton.

Goals from Mark Davies and Jamie Proctor secured victory for League One Bolton whose goalkeeper Mark Howard saved a second half penalty from Scott Fenwick.

Despite the result, McNamara was pleased with his side's performance - just two weeks before the opening game of the National League season at Maidstone United.

"It was a good exercise against strong opposition," he said. "For the majority of the game, I thought we looked solid enough and we won't come up against that quality week-in, week-out in the league we are in.

"Over the last few games, we have got stronger and we are moving the ball quicker," he said. "They are gelling, they are helping each other on the park. If one players misses a tackle, the other one is in there. There is a good team spirit and that's something you look for first. It can set you up for the season."

Defender Lanre Oyebanjo was not involved against Bolton after signing a one year deal to return to the club on Friday night.

He is likely to play in tomorrow's home game against Doncaster Rovers or the trip to Harrogate Town on Wednesday night.

Although his final season at Crawley Town was blighted by injury, Oyebanjo had been given the 'all-clear' after a lengthy medical prior to his move.

"He damaged his knee (at Crawley) and we had to cover ourselves," said McNamara. "But he's been given the all clear. It was just a case of letting it settle down.

"Hopefully, he will get a bit of game time against Doncaster or Harrogate. He says he is feeling a lot better. We will evaluate that on Monday.

"We had been chasing him for a while so I was delighted to get it over the line," he added. "He's a good lad with good experience but still young at 26 and coming into his prime. It's a great signing."

Defender Matt Fry was substituted with an ankle injury shortly before the end of the Bolton game and will be assessed this morning.

Matty Dixon is due to return to the squad after missing this weekend with a groin problem.

But Ben Barber (hamstring) remains sidelined and is unlikely to be ready for the start of the season.

Bolton manager Phil Parkinson, meanwhile, also had words of praise for York ahead of the new season.

The former Bradford City manager said: "York is a very friendly club and I have been here a few times down the years. I hope they do well this year and, I think they will, from what I have seen today.

"I can see York look a lot better team than last year. They have signed a lot of players - and I don't live too far away from here so I had monitored that in the local paper.

"But they are in a competitive division as well," he added. "There are a lot of teams in the Conference who spend a lot of money but their squad does look a lot stronger than at this time last year."
