A HEAD teacher will have her last day in charge of a York primary school next week, while another local school teacher has taught her final lesson.

Rose Mazza, the head at St George’s RC Primary in Fishergate, is leaving at the end of the current term, after 10 years at the school, and eight years as head teacher.

The 52-year-old, who is moving to the Orkney Islands off the coast of Scotland, has been in teaching for 30 years.

She said: “I have had a tremendous time.

“I’ve benefitted from support from all the community, including children, staff and families.

“I am leaving St George’s but it’s not an official retirement. It’s possible I might carry on teaching.”

She added: “I would say St George’s is a very special place.

“We have a diverse and rich community. I will miss the children and staff.”

Penny Gardonyi with pupils at Lord Deramore’s Primary in York

Another teacher who is bidding farewell to a York school is Penny Gardonyi, who has retired this week after being in the profession for 38 years.

Mrs Gardonyi, 59, has worked at Lord Deramore’s Primary in Heslington for the last 18 years.

Up until last year, she was a deputy head teacher at the school, a role she held for 10 years.

She said: “I have loved every minute of my teaching career.

“Being part of the school community has been wonderful.

“I have made many friends.

“I am excited about the adventures to come but I will miss everybody, particularly the children.

“I’m a bit sad it has come to an end but I’m looking forward to the future.”

Lord Deramore’s held a tea party for Mrs Gardonyi, which has attended by pupils and parents, past and present.
