TWO inspiring and supportive primary schools have entered the race for a Community Pride award.

Fishergate Primary School and Rufforth Primary School are competing to be crowned School of the Year, after they were nominated by parents for the work their staff have done to encourage and develop young minds.

Claire Kafker nominated Fishergate on behalf of a number of parents.

She said: “One of the things that I value most about Fishergate is the way the school celebrates a wide range of talents.

“In particular I love the Kindness Awards that children can be nominated for if they have been seen to carry out a particularly kind act.

“By placing such importance on things like kindness, compassion and caring, as well as academic and sporting ability, the children are learning the skills they need to be rounded and decent individuals.

Another proud parent added: “My son is ahead in his reading but hasn’t the same enthusiasm for writing, so the Early Years team started Write Dance sessions with him and one of his friends.

“Write Dance uses music and movement to introduce handwriting to children and help improve motor skills, providing a strong foundation for writing. Needless to say my son loves these sessions and it has given him a lot of confidence.”

Rufforth Primary has been nominated, not only for its work with children, but for the passion it has for the community.

Children are encouraged to take part in village events and do what they can to help others.

They recently made biscuits and flapjacks during a village baking event and the whole school entered a writing competition about their favourite food.

Parent Michelle Hills said: “It’s a dynamic place and deserves to be recognised.

“Our daughter has come on so far this year having coasted previously elsewhere.

“The after school clubs and extra curricular activities are second to none including sewing, gardening, sport and music.”

David Anderson added: “Rufforth Primary school is a brilliant example of what a community primary school should be.”

“The school interacts with parents and other schools and makes a major impact on the community spirit in Rufforth.”

The Community Pride Awards are sponsored by Benenden and jointly run by The Press and City of York Council.

All nominees must live in, or contribute to life in, the City of York Council area.

About three finalists from each category will be invited to the awards ceremony at York Racecourse in October.
