A BEDROOM has been badly damaged by fire at a house in Selby.

North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said the occupier was out when the blaze broke out at the semi-detached property in Coupland Road on Saturday evening, but returned while crews were at the scene.

A spokeswoman said there was severe fire damage to the bedroom and smoke damage to first floor.

There was also some smoke damage to the ground floor and smoke spread to next door's property via a loft hatch, with crews evacuating the neighbours as a precaution before ventilating the property.

"The cause of the fire is not known at present," she added.

Meanwhile, crews from Acomb tackled a fire in a field near Melrosegate in York, using buckets of water and beaters, and firefighters dealt with a car fire on the A1 northbound between Allerton Park and Boroughbridge, which was well alight on their arrival.

Another fire in a shed in Slessor Road, Acomb, was started by radiated heat from old barbecue coals. The fire was well alight on the arrival of crews, who put it out.
