KAINE Felix intends to be a regular on the York City scoreesheet this season after admitting a regular goal supply is expected from wingers during the modern era.

The prolific exploits of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Arjen Robben have upped the stakes for flank raiders at all levels in recent years.

Felix, 20, managed eight in 76 outings for former club Boston United, while his fellow wide attacker and City summer signing Daniel Nti managed double figures in each of his past three campaigns for Worcester.

The last two wingers who were handed two-year deals at Bootham Crescent – Lindon Meikle and Anthony Straker – both failed to net once for the Minstermen during 32 and 27 outings respectively.

But the former Peterborough academy prospect is determined to weigh in with his share, whilst also providing a host of opportunities for team-mates.

He said: “I like to get the ball, run to the byline and whip crosses in, while chipping in with as many assists as I can so, hopefully, the lads will like my personality and style of play. Being a winger, the likes of Ronaldo, Robben and Bale have made our goal tally go up in recent years as well, which means we have to get a few.”

Having lost in the National League North play-offs for the last two seasons with Boston, Felix is also itching to finally prove himself in the fifth tier of English football and required little persuasion to leave behind his full-time job packing shampoo bottles.

“I was out of contract at Boston and was waiting around to see if I would get any other offers,” he revealed. “I was just working in a factory, packaging shampoo and lotions and putting them on pallets, but then York City came along.

“I got a call from my agent, telling me that the club wanted to see me and he asked what the situation would be with work. I said: ‘Forget work, I’m going’.

“It will be the first time I’ve played at this level, so it will be a challenge, but it’s the opportunity I’ve wanted for ages and I don’t want to let it slip by, so I’m going to grab it with both hands. From being at school, I just used to look out at the Astroturf during my English lessons, wanting to be out there and, now, I’ve got fantastic facilities, players and staff around me, which can only improve my game.

“It was depressing missing out in the play-offs for two years in a row at Boston, but this is a fresh start and I want to make the most of it and run with it.”

Having been unable to accept a previous call-up to the England C squad due to injury, the enthusiastic Felix is now hoping his move to North Yorkshire will help him get another chance to represent his country.

“I was injured for four months with my ankle and, when I got the call-up, I’d already been out for two,” he explained. “I tried to rush myself back and take the medication to get the swelling down, but it didn’t work.

“That opportunity passed me by, but now I feel like I’ve got a bigger opportunity, playing for a bigger club, to get my football back on track and, hopefully, get another call-up.”

Felix added that the raft of new Minstermen arrivals during the close season has meant that nobody feels like an outsider, ahead of the new campaign.

“It’s made things easier because nobody has got their own group of mates and everyone interacts with each other, which has helped with squad camaraderie,” he reasoned.
