THE owners of a York shopping centre want to add a York-themed crazy golf course on part of their car park.

International Golf Development, in Beverley, would create the 12-hole course beside the Designer Outlet just south of York.

They say the tricky holes would be based on the city’s famous attractions, or parts of its history.

If the plans are approved, the designer outlet would lose 26 parking spaces, but gain a Shambles-style clubhouse for golfers to pick up their clubs and balls, before embarking on a tour around holes based on the Bar Walls, St Mary’s Abbey and Clifford's Tower.

Other obstacles found around the course will include a 1.4metre high Viking helmet, stocks and a hut in the style of one of the Shambles buildings, between holes 11 and 12.

A planning application has been submitted to City of York Council. A supporting statement with that says: “The proposed adventure golf course has been designed in such a way that it will provide a very challenging playing experience that sits comfortably within the landscape.

“The proposed adventure golf course comprises 12 holes that can be played as one round with an expected play time of around 30 to 40 minutes. The proposed design also incorporates two ways of playing each hole- a difficult and an easy route which encourages visitors to re-play the course but also appeals to visitors of all age groups and abilities.

“A dedicated kiosk has been included in the design, for operating the course, supplying supervising play.

“Players will come from the kiosk and ‘tee-off’ from hole one. Space for a waiting area has been identified adjacent to the kiosk for peak times where seating will be made available.”

The planning application is being considered by the council and a decision is likely within the next few weeks.
