FOR the second year running the World Naked Bike Ride flaunted its way through the streets of York.

Cyclists bared all to demonstrate the risks they face on the roads and the impact that cars have on the environment.

The ride began in Memorial Gardens at 6pm yesterday and took a route through the city, taking in York Minster, Clifford's Tower and the Millennium Bridge.

The ride is perhaps one of the most imaginative and spectacular environmental protests, not surprising when many of the participants are nude.

Andy Scaife, of Bike Rescue, took part in the ride both this year and last.

He said: "To be honest, the main reason for doing it is fun.

"But it does have its own agenda as well. The naked aspect is to emphasise the vulnerability of cyclists and the impact traffic can have.

"The reaction from people was fantastic.

"There was a lot of general hilarity and people just having good fun."

Clothing is optional - last year's ride saw shorts, swimwear, body paint, wigs, sunglasses, and even one cyclist dressed as Father Christmas.

Other British cities taking part in the event this weekend include Southampton, Manchester, London and Brighton. More than 40 cities worldwide take part.

The event is now in its fourth year.
