More than 90 per cent of NUT members voted in favour of strike action, on a 24.5 per cent turnout.

The union is demanding increased funding to schools and education, a guarantee of terms and conditions in all types of schools and a resumption of negotiations on teacher contracts to allow workload to be addressed.

Acting general secretary Kevin Courtney said Nicky Morgan should engage properly with teachers to address 'real problems' which were occurring in schools.

"The Education Secretary should negotiate with teacher unions on protections for school teachers from a workload crisis which is now completely out of hand.”

The Department for Education said it was 'disappointing' the union had chosen to take 'unnecessary and damaging' strike action, which less than a quarter of its members had voted for.

"It is even more disappointing when we have offered and committed to formal talks between ministers and the unions to address their concerns about pay," said a spokesman.

"Industrial action causes disruption to children's education and parents who have to take time out of work to arrange childcare, we urge the NUT not to proceed with this strike and to resolve pay disputes at the negotiating table rather than playing politics with children's futures."
