A TEAM of cyclists have completed a fundraising event for charity.

Karen and James Burdass, from Haxby, along with their friends and family, have taken part in a four-day challenge which included a 220-mile bike ride, a 5km swim in Lake Windermere and a hike up Helvellyn, in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust.

The couple organised the event as a thank you for the care and support the organisation gave their nephew, Eddy Clarkson, when he was treated at St James’s Hospital Leeds last year.

Karen said: “After entering for the 5k event at The Great North Swim in Lake Windermere, we thought ‘why not cycle there, trek up Helvellyn, do the swim, then cycle back home again?’

“We were aiming to raise £5,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust but due to everyone’s wonderful generosity we have already raised well in excess of this so we now have our sights set on a target of £10,000.

“The money that we raise will help more young people diagnosed with cancer to get the specialist care and expert support that they need.”

Eddy is now in remission and at home, and the team has raised more than their £10,000 target.

Eddy and his family are still supported by the TCT, which relies on donations to fund its work.

Heather Bowen, the trust’s regional manager for Yorkshire and The Humber, said: “The To Helv and Back challenge is not for the faint-hearted and we are in awe of the sheer guts and determination of all of the participants.”
