A STUNNED driver says more signs should have been placed around roadworks after he only became aware of a speed camera when it flashed him.

Ross Stewart, the director of a self storage and transport company, was travelling eastbound through roadworks on the A64 flyover last week.

As one of thousands of drivers who use the road every day, he is aware of a 50mph speed trap between the A1036 and A19 slip roads.

However, the 47-year-old was fined £100 when he was caught out in a short 30mph section, which slows drivers down to go over a ramp.

He said: "It's ridiculous. I was doing 48mph in what I thought was a 50mph zone, but just before a big metal ramp there is a 30mph sign.

"They need to give more warning to drivers and before the camera.

"It's not well sign-posted at all and when I phoned the Highways Agency they told me they had already had a few phone calls about it.

"There has to be some regulations to warn people."

Mr Stewart, from Elvington, says he was left astounded by the fine and returned to the spot to see if others were being caught out.

He claims that in 15 minutes the camera flashed 50 drivers who unwittingly thought they were within the speed limit, equivalent to 200 an hour, and he believes the authorities will rake in thousands of pounds.

Highways England is responsible for the roadworks and signs, and told The Press there were enough in place to warn drivers.

She said: "The temporary 30mph speed limit which was in place on the A64 Ouse Bridge was to ensure the safety of road users and our workforce while we completed necessary repairs to a section of the bridge.

"Our contractors installed extra signs along the route to warn drivers of the change in speed and the speed limit has now returned back to 50mph.

"We would like to thank drivers for their patience and we are doing everything we can to keep the impact of the work to a minimum."
