YORK’S former council leader Chris Steward is fundraising for the Stroke Association after suffering a stroke last month.

Chris Steward, who stood down as council leader in May after his stroke at the age of 36, is joining former Labour councillor Fiona Fitzpatrick to raise money by taking part in Step Out for Stroke in Rowntree Park.

Ms Fitzpatrick had a stroke in 2011 at the age of 58, and the two political opponents are joining forces to raise money for the Stroke Association, which helps and supports people who have had strokes.

Cllr Steward said: “I know first-hand the devastating affects stroke can have on someone’s life. I am really looking forward to taking part in the event and by raising money being able to benefit other people who have suffered strokes.”

He has also thanked people for their support in person, via email or in cards sent over the last few weeks.

Ms Fitzpatrick added: “My stroke was a huge shock, but I was determined to not let it beat me. The Stroke Association’s information and support were invaluable in helping me understand and come to terms with my life as a stroke survivor.”

Last month The Press reported how Cllr Steward had resigned as council leader but has continued on as the executive as portfolio holder for finance and performance.

At the time he tweeted: “Thanks for all the good wishes, hellishly tough period of late but made more bearable by some brilliant support,” and later said: “Second time today a stranger has stopped, checked I was the councillor that was unwell and given me good wishes. Much appreciated.”

A stroke is a serious, life-threatening medical condition that occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off.

Strokes are a medical emergency and urgent treatment is essential because the sooner a person receives treatment for a stroke, the less damage is likely to happen.

In the UK, strokes are a major health problem. Every year, around 110,000 people have a stroke in England and it is the third largest cause of death, after heart disease and cancer.

Step Out for Stroke takes place in Rowntree Park on Saturday, July 2.
