England have crashed out of Euro 2016 after going down 2-1 to Iceland - leading Roy Hodgson to quit his role as Three Lions manager.

England fans went through the full range of emotions during a balmy night on the French Riviera - from the elation when Wayne Rooney put the side 1-0 up after four minutes through to despair at the final whistle.

Supporters packed into the fan zone at the Place Massena with England backers far outnumbering their Icelandic counterparts.

But despite filling the city with chants of "Vardy's on fire, their defence is terrified" and "Please don't take me home", it was the Iceland fans who were left cheering as the game, and England's chances in the tournament, drew to a close.

Shortly after the final whistle, Hodgson confirmed he was stepping down in his role as England coach.

Reacting to the news, England fan Tom Lambert said: "He makes (Fabio) Capello and Sven (Goran Eriksson) look acceptable.

"That's how bad he was.

"If it's an English guy, it's got to be Pardew."

Other fans said they were "delighted" that Hodgson had left the post.

Neil Gorman, 31, from Essex, said: "We beat Germany with Kane and Vardy up front and Roy decided never to play them up front together again.

"I'm glad he's gone. Delighted. He needs to look at us who have travelled to France to back England and apologise."

Meanwhile, fans were gutted to see their side crash out to Iceland in the last 16 and miss out on a tie against France in the next round.

Wayne Johnstone, 47, of Manchester, said: "At the end of the day, we just couldn't get a goal. It's just heartbreaking.

"My fiancee is French and I was hoping we'd win and there would be a game between England and France in the quarter-final but it isn't to be.

"I won't hear the last of it when I get back. I'll be in for plenty of stick."

Ben Hesketh, 27, of Preston said: "I just feel depressed, to be honest. It's teams like that we should be beating. That was atrocious really.

"You've got to feel for the fans who have come out here, spent all their money and then this."

Phil Harrison, 26, also of Preston, said: "Part of me is glad they've won because they're the nicest fans I've ever met. We'll clap them and join in their party."

Joe Fowler, from Bradford, said: "England were absolutely shocking. They don't deserve to be at the tournament. Every round they've played, they've been diabolical. They do not play as a team and it's upsetting."

Derek Wainwright, 52, from Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, said: "I'm a bit shell-shocked. To have an England captain taken off after 80 minutes. I just do not know what to say."
