IN reply to Mr Scott (Letters, June 10), he seems to be blaming York’s manufacturing decline on the EU when it is down to corporate profits.

Terry’s was sold to an American company and shut due to costs/profit margins; printing is now a machine and computer process - we don’t need things that used to be printed such as phone books; and Associated British Foods took a financial decision - all decisions down to living in a globalised economy driven by corporate profit.

As computers take over processes less people will work in manufacturing.

I can tell Mr Scott that there are apprenticeships/training – I have a Year 11 daughter and in 21st century employment the majority of young men and women don’t want to work in manufacturing and are training for a high-tech and service orientated future.

Mr Scott mentions Greece and Spain. Past political and economic decisions have shaped their economies; Spain put all its eggs in the property basket which failed after the US sub-prime scandal tanked the world economy, whereas Greece has had a tax collection issues for decades.

Finally, for Mr Scott’s information I have worked in the voluntary sector for over 20 years.
