BURGLARS have hit a hairdresser's salon in Acomb for the second time in just over a year, prompting a warning to other businesses nearby.

Staff from Hair by Zara in Front Street came into work on Saturday morning to find the front door had been kicked in and the salon ransacked.

For the second time in around 14 months, criminals had targeted the shop overnight and taken hard earned cash from the premises. Horrified staff were greeted by scene of destruction when they arrived at around 8.30am, and manager Faith Goodall said they are now scared to work into the evening.

She said: "Last time it was just a little bit of cash, but this time it's more cash and they have caused a lot of damage. They've kicked the door in and broken some of the wall as well."

The aftermath of the break-in

Worryingly, Faith and the other staff think the burglars have been to the shop several times overnight to look around.

"For about three weeks now we've come in on a morning to find the security camera outside has been turned around and pointed upwards.

"We think they have been coming to check it out, and they've picked their night to come back and break in."

"We have some girls who work alone on a night, and we are all worried about being here now. It's all our wages they have taken."

Faith said they are now planning to increase the security measures at the shop and make sure cash is never left overnight, and they are warning other businesses in the area to take precautions.

Police say their investigations are still going on, and they have appealed for anyone with information to get in touch.
