A DRUG addict has been jailed after turning to dealing to pay for his habit.

Daniel Rhys Scarisbrick, of Edgerton Garth, Tadcaster, was sentenced at York Crown Court for a number of drug offences, including possession with intent to supply MDMA and ketamine, being concerned with the supply of MDMA and cocaine, and possession of cocaine.

The court heard Scarisbrick, 21, became involved in supply of drugs between April 2014 and November 2015 to finance his habit.

Neil Cutte, for Scarisbrick, said his client was "a young man on the cusp of adult life", whose family were "worried about his personal safety in the future", and who had no previous drug convictions.

He said: "He realises there is no future in drugs. He's not a stupid person."

Mr Cutte said Scarisbrick had taken measures to beat his addiction, and sending him to Hull Prison "is going to be a significant punishment for him, something that has worried him a lot", but his client accepted it was the likely outcome and that "close family support will continue".

His Honour Davey QC warned Scarisbrick that the starting point for sentencing was four years and three months, but said "substantial credit" was gained by positive references submitted to the court, along with his guilty plea.

Sentencing Scarisbrick on Thursday to two years and four months months in prison, he said: "It is an unfortunate tale of a young man at a young age becoming involved in drugs, but what happened with you is what normally happens in these cases. Drug use becomes higher and higher, addiction becomes deeper and deeper.

"I am impressed by and accept as genuine the efforts you have made to rid yourself of this addiction to drugs, which got you into so much trouble.

Scarisbrick was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £120, and £150 which North Yorkshire Police said was proceeds of crime, was also forfeit.
