TAXI drivers across York say their vehicles are being targeted by thieves.

A social media forum run by taxi drivers in York has reported vehicles being broken into in Clifton, Huntington, New Earswick, Heworth and Tang Hall, and drivers had been advised to take extra care with their vehicles.

Gary Dodson, pictured below, is a Hackney Carriage driver, and his Mercedes E Class was broken into outside his home in Haxby Road in the early hours of Friday.

He said the local taxi driver community was aware of many more cabs being damaged in a recent spate of break-ins, for relatively small amounts of money or even just change.

Mr Dodson said: "I think taxi drivers are being targeted, some of us do leave a bit of money in the car, maybe only £10, a little bit of change.

"I had to go through a scrappers in Oldham. I'm normally on duty by about 2pm on Friday, but because of this I've lost five hours or more. That would cost upwards of £100 and cost me £30 for the new window, but a new one would be much more."

A police spokesman said forensic examination was carried out on the vehicle, and house to house enquiries had taken place in regards Mr Dodson's break-in, and increased patrols would be carried out in the area.

Although the spokesman could not confirm exact details about a spate of taxis being targeted, he said "A number of taxis have been broken into in recent weeks, and we are working proactively with the local authority’s licensing team to address this issue".

Inspector Lee Pointon, of York Police, urged all motorists to do whatever they could to deter criminals, and reminded the public that even a small amount of money could be enough to tempt criminals to break into a vehicle.

Insp Pointon said: "Criminals are particularly on the lookout for phones, bags, shopping, even loose change, and if the opportunity is there, they will take it.

"If at all possible, never leave valuable items in your vehicle, and close the windows and lock the doors when leaving it unattended for any length of time. Park with care, particularly at night, or if you are leaving your vehicle for a long time. If you can, park in a well-lit, busy area, or a secure garage."
