A ROADSWEEPER overturned in York today, trapping the driver.

The vehicle toppled at about 1.45pm in James Street, off Lawrence Street, trapping the male driver by his ankle between the road and the cab.

Emergency services were called to the scene, and witnesses said staff and customers from a nearby business rushed to assist.

A spokeswoman for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service said the driver of the roadsweeper had suffered "arm, shoulder and leg injuries".

One witness said: "Staff and customers of ATS immediately came to his aid, ATS staff using jacks to take the weight of the front of the vehicle off the operative's leg whilst a customer talked to and reassured the casualty and another customer contacted the emergency services who responded within minutes."

ATS were contacted by The Press, but refused to comment.

Paramedics and fire crews assisted the driver from the cab, and he was helped into an ambulance before being taken to York Hospital.

City of York Council said all three of the authority's roadsweepers had been recalled while an investigation into the incident takes place.
