ACKLAM

AGM - Acklam and Barthorpe Parish annual general meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 8 in Acklam Village Hall at 7pm.

APPLETON-LE-MOORS Timeline project - Ryedale Village History Group met in the village hall to discuss the timeline project. All the material has been gathered and recorded on a spreadsheet. The next task is to present it in an acceptable form for printing. It is anticipated it size will be monochrome A1 or A0 paper size. However, it may be necessary to print a pre and post 1600 version to make it easier to handle and read. The next meeting will be at Levisham on Wednesday, July 6 History walk - Jim Hall of the History Group led a walk for eight guests of The Moors Inn. Starting at the village, the walkers visited Sinnington and Appleton Mill before returning to the inn. A number of the group’s publications were purchased and a donation of £35 made to group funds.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON Hidden Village – Actress Penelope Keith was in Brompton on Sunday filming for the TV series Penelope Keith’s Hidden Villages. She and the crew had their coffee break in the village hall. Penelope and her husband noticed the telephone box with the defibrillator inside and admired the story of the village’s refurbishment of the box and the funding for the defibrillator from the George Bairstow Charitable Trust. The focus of her programme, to be shown probably in September, will be on the story of Sir George Cayley inventing the first heavier- than-air flying machine in Brompton. Although the television company were aware of William Wordsworth’s wedding having taken place in All Saints Church, one hidden story about the village was sufficient for filming. Taking a lead from Penelope Keith, the title for open gardens on Sunday, June 19, which will include Wordsworth’s wildflowers in the church, will be The Hidden Village.

Market - The May market is due to be held on Bank Holiday Monday, May 30. If you have any bric-a-brac, produce or spare plants that could be sold on the village hall stall phone Di Ford on 01723 859211. There are still tables to rent if anyone would like to run their own stall. Rental is £5 and all proceeds will go to the George Bairstow Trust, the charity that donated the defibrillator to the village.

Community lunch - The Village Ventures community lunch in the village hall held on Wednesday, May 18 was well attended. The meal was planned and prepared by Lynn Heaton and her catering team. The next lunch will be on Wednesday, June 15 at 12.30pm, when the occasion will be used to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday.

Church - There will be no service at All Saints on Sunday. As it is a fifth Sunday in the month there will be a Benefice service for the group of villages and will be at St Stephen’s Church, Snainton. It will be a Communion service taken by the vicar, starting at 10.30am.

BULMER Bridge club - The winners of the meeting on Thursday, May 19 were John Prest and Tom Nutman with 65.4 per cent. Second were Jackie Webb and Derek Searle with 62.1 per cent. North/South winners at the meeting the previous week were Thelma Hardware and Charlie Chambers with 65.1 percent with Lesley and Arthur Connor recording 63.9 per cent for second place. Vale and Drummond Murray won at East/West with 55.9 percent from Jackie Webb and Derek Searle who gained 53.5 per cent HOVINGHAM Market – There will be a village market on Saturday, June 4. The May market was blessed with glorious weather and among the attractions were the work of local blacksmith artist David Stephenson, the Hovingham War Memorial restoration project and the rare breed sheep open day taking place the following day. In July, the market organisers are jointly sponsoring professional tennis coaching for children aged between five and 10 years old. KIRKBYMOORSIDE Daffodil walk - The annual daffodil walk in Farndale on Saturday, April 16, raised £4,808 for the local Marie Curie nursing service which provides free home nursing for people with cancer and other terminal illnesses. The Kirkbymoorside Marie Curie Group would like to thank the walk leaders and anyone who supported the event.

Hidden gardens – Several hidden gardens in the town will be open to the public on Sunday, June 5 from 11am to 5pm. Maps and tickets, costing £5 for adults, children are free, can be obtained from the In Bloom stall in the town centre on the day. Admission includes cream tea.

Bridge club - North/South winners at the latest game were Barry Smith and Bob Wardell with 65.8 per cent. Clarissa Napier and Christine Brett were runners-up with 56.2 per cent. East/West was won by Bo and Tony Simpson with 67.1 per cent Ann Scott and Frank Bailey were second on 53.9 per cent. Play of the week went to Christine Roberts Holland and Bryan Wilson. The summer buffet is on Tuesday, June 7 at noon.

Club act - The entertainment at the Moorside Bar & Club on Saturday is provided by Country Cousins, starting at 8.30pm.

LEAVENING Christian Aid - Afternoon tea was served in the church on Saturday, May 21 and raised £105 for Christian Aid. The organisers wish to thanks the people who baked items for the day and anyone who supported the event.

Garage sale - There will be a garage sale in the village on Sunday, June 19 between 10am and noon. Various householders around the village will be selling their unwanted items from tables set up in their gardens and garages.

MALTON Luncheon club - Malton Ladies Luncheon Club met on Thursday, May 19 for a meal at the Forest & Vale Hotel, Pickering. Steve Cassidy then entertained members with singing and guitar playing, including many favourite tunes. The next meeting is in June a will be a birthday celebration fit for a Queen. Flower club - The May meeting of Malton and District Flower Club featured a fun demonstration by Lucy Hutton-Smith called Bloom Where you are Planted. The designs showed how unusual containers can be made by up-cycling to show case a vast range of flowers, plants, including herbs and vegetables and twigs from both gardens and the wild. The materials grown both at home and commercially, sometimes from abroad, created a striking and original display.

At the first club spring open evening, the international demonstrator, Ian Lloyd, created a mass of spectacular arrangements. National Flower Arranging Day was held on Friday, May 6 and Flower Club members joined in the Lonely Bouquet Day initiative by leaving flower gifts in town and around the villages. MARTON AND NORMANBY Gardening Club – The May meeting was opened by the president, Bill Tweedle, who introduced Gill Tomkinson who gave a talk called Lavender and Pinks. She runs her own business from Broomfleet in East Yorkshire called Lavender Blue. She spoke about many varieties, propagation and pruning, not only about lavenders but dianthus as well. She brought many of her nursery plants for sale for the members to buy at the end of the evening. The members’ competition was won by Pam Towler. There will be no members’ competition in June as there will be on a club outing when the tour starts at 6.30pm.

OLD MALTON AGM - St Mary’s Priory Women’s Fellowship’s AGM was opened by the Rev Peter Robinson with a short service of prayers. Reports were given by the chairman, secretary and treasurer. The balance sheet was approved by J Lawrence and seconded by C England. Rev Robinson then thanked the members for their considerable contribution to church funds. This was followed by the election of officers. Eunice Farlam was unanimously retained as chairman, was the treasurer, Anne Shipley. Anne Smith stood as secretary and Anne White was voted in to take her place. The committee stood en-block. The monthly meeting followed after refreshments. Eunice issued lists for the summer outing to Hornsea on Thursday, June 23 and a visit to Dringhouses Fellowship on Monday, June 13. Anne Shipley and Anne Smith won the quiz. Eunice did some pre-garden fete preparation, confirming that last year’s stallholders would be available again on Saturday, July 9. The next meeting will be a committee meeting and the next monthly meeting will be on Thursday, June 2.

PICKERING Flower club - Pickering and District Flower Club is hosting an open meeting tonight (Wednesday) at the Kirk Theatre, Hungate, at 7.30pm. The guest demonstrators are Elaine Bedford and Carys Harrison and their presentation is called Celebrate Good Times. Tickets cost £10 and you can pay at the door.

Fair - A fleamarket and collectables, together with a craft and gift fair will be held at the Liberal Club, Smiddy Hill, for four days over the Bank Holiday weekend from Saturday, May 28 to Tuesday, May 31, from 10am to 4pm. Last year the fair raised £310 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Modified car show – The annual modified car show will take place on Sunday, June 19 at the Showground on the A169 from 9am to 5pm. The show will include the Yorkshire Top 20 Show Car competition. There will be an indoor specialist trade village, Stannage International stunt team will be performing, along with DJs and MCs, dancers and models. There will be club stand displays, trade stands, driver challenge obstacle course, radio controlled car arena, individual car entries, funfair, catering and licensed bar, driver challenge.

Domino drive - Pickering Town Football Club will hold a domino drive at Recreation Club, Mill Lane, on Friday, June 17 at 7.30pm.

Fishkeepers - There will be a meeting of the Ryedale Aquarist Society at the Potter Hill home Sue and David Marshall, on Wednesday, June 1 at 7.30pm., The society will be holding its annual open show and auction of aquatic items on Sunday, June 12 in the Kirby Misperton Village Hall from 10am.

Musical Society – Sentimental Journey will be presented by Pickering Musical Society at the Kirk Theatre, Hungate, from Wednesday, October 12 to Sunday, October 16 as its war week production. There will be a murder mystery night, organised by the Friends of Kirk Theatre, on Friday at 7.30pm. Another tribute show, Full Nelson, featuring the music of Willie Nelson, will be held on Saturday, June 18 at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £12. The Howard Hebron Band will appear at the theatre on Saturday, July 16 at 7.30pm. People can help the society by becoming a Friend of the Kirk Theatre. It costs £25 per year to help with special fundraising events throughout the year. Friends receive exclusive discounts when buying tickets for shows, get regular newsletters, an early indication of up and coming shows, and a unique Friends’ show night. Weekly draw - The £1,725 main prize in last week’s Pickering Town FC Super Draw was not won with the numbers 15, 20 and 37. This week’s draw will be increased to £1,800.

Jazz festival - The fourth Ryedale Festival of Traditional Jazz will be held from Sunday, July 24 to Saturday, July 30. The opening concert on Sunday will be at 2.20pm in the Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul. The remaining concerts will be in the Memorial Hall at 7.30pm. A six-day ticket costs £45 if paid for before Tuesday, May 31, a saving of £10. Individual tickets cost £9 if bought before next Tuesday. After that date they will cost £11 each. RBL - The Pickering and Thornton-le-Dale branch of the Royal British Legion will be attending Armed Forces Day in Scarborough on Saturday, June 25, with a parade at noon on the seafront. It will be followed by a concert at the Open Air Theatre starring Alfie Boe. Anyone wishing to be nominated for the position of county chairman for the North and East Yorkshire County must be nominated by the branch to the membership support officer to be received by Friday, June 10 at 5pm.

PEEMS - There will be a meeting of the Pickering Experimental Engineering and Model Society held at the WRVS Hungate Centre on Wednesday, June 1 at 7pm.

Farmers’ market – The monthly farmers’ market will be held in the Market Place, on Thursday, June 2 from 8.30am.

RILLINGTON AGM - The annual general meeting of the parish council was held in the church rooms on Monday, May 9. Officers elected were chairman, Darren M Flinton; vice-chairman, Julie A Stonehouse; representative on village hall committee, Tracey Ireland and Yorkshire Local Councils Association representative, Susan E Butler. Gary A C Waters was co-opted on to the council after the resignation of Robin Maud. The draft minutes of the meeting and the ordinary meeting which followed can be viewed on the parish council website.

Bingo - A prize bingo held in Woodlands Community Centre raised £549, which including donations, for Child Diabetes. The caller was Melvyn Jacques and the checker Sue Nelson. The next prize bingo at the centre will be on Wednesday, June 22 and is in aid of Ryedale Carers Support.

Guild meeting - Fifteen members and two visitors were present at the May meeting of Rillington and District Ladies Guild held in Woodlands Community Centre. The president, Gillian De-Jong, introduced Christina Hampshire who gave a talk called Not Just Cross Stitch. She spoke about the history of embroidery and its uses. She illustrated her talk with examples of her own work. Judy Duke thanked Christina her talk. Judy sold tickets for the raffle. The evening's hostesses were Margaret Lund and Tina Buckle. The June outing is to Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. Cars will depart from the Fleece Inn at 1pm.

Quiz - Fifteen teams, playing for £110 in prize money, took part in Mike Williams’ general knowledge quiz in the Fleece Inn. The winners were Weaverthorpe 4, second were Honeymooners and third Team @ the Bar. A consolation prize was awarded to newcomers The Steamers. The £25 jackpot was won by No Brainers.

Mike’s next quiz in the Fleece will be on Friday, June 3.

Beer festival - A beer festival with live music from Juri Juices will be held at the Coach and Horses on Sunday from 7.30pm.

RYEDALE Parkinson’s Support - The April meeting of Ryedale Parkinson's Support Group was held at the Steam and Moorland Garden Centre, Pickering, when 22 members and friends enjoyed lunch. At the May meeting, held at Trinity Methodist church, Norton, Derek and Eileen Searle gave a talk on their lives in Bahrain and that of the Muslim Woman. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, June 9 at Park Farm, Rillington, with guests from Ryedale Stroke Group. SEAMER St Martin's - The Rev Richard Firth led the 9.30am service of Holy Communion for Trinity Sunday, during which he baptised Monty Paul Roberts, the younger son of Matthew and Faye Roberts. Using a story from the tales of Winnie the Pooh, Richard likened the care that Christopher Robin exercised over the animals of the Hundred Acre Wood, to that of God. Jo Thompson gave a bible reading and together with Kate Middleton assisted with the distribution of communion. Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano, Doreen Livesey and Marion Baird were sidespersons, and Clare Firth and Sue Johnson served refreshments. The vicar, Rev Andrew Moreland, presided at the 11am modern communion service and talked about the various ways used to explain the Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Sue Grice led the intercessions, Jean Fiedler read and Elizabeth Moreland assisted with the chalice. Richard Fuller (guitar) led the sung worship with John Grice (guitar), Sue Grice (bass) and John Taylor (drums). Wendy Haslam and Jean Donovan ran the Sunday Club, Liz Cremer was the sidesperson and Wendy also served refreshments after the service together with Elizabeth Moreland.

SHERBURN St Hilda’s Church – Rev Judy Duke officiated at the Holy Communion service with Barbara Grice assisting with the chalice. Martin Monkman was the organist and the lesson was read by Tony Mok. Sidespersons were Keith and Jean Usher, who also served coffee at the close of the service. The garden at Jackson’s Wold was opened on Sunday as part of the National Gardens when teas were served by the ladies of the church. The proceeds from sale of the teas amounted to £438.50, which was donated by Mr and Mrs Richard Cundall to St Hilda’s. Helpers were Edith Harrison, Pam Foxton, Angela Holdsworth, Jean Usher, Betty Flinton, Laura Cundall and Barbara Grice. The gardens are again open for charity on Sunday, June 26 when the proceeds from the teas will again be donated to St Hilda’s. The next service at church is on Sunday, June 12 at 10.30am when Barbara Grice will be leading worship.

Draw - The letters draw in Saturday’s Sherburn FC letters draw were F Q U. As there was no winner, next week’s prize fund will be £160.

Record numbers – The last three weeks have been a record for the Community and Sports Club with more than 350 people using the facility. During the quiz night £190 and one of the junior teams raised more than £350 for club funds during its presentation night. The club is also grateful to our local doctors for using its facilities while the surgery has been refurbished.

Luncheon club - Members of the Senior Citizen Luncheon Club met for a meal to celebrate Rosemary and John’s diamond wedding anniversary. Birthday greetings were sung to for John, Jean, Betty and Dennis. After the meal, Jean and Janet organised games. The helpers were Sandra, Judith, Jean, Kim, Janet, Kay, Christine, John and Angela. The next Luncheon Club will be on Wednesday, June 15 and will celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. Club members should meet from 12.30pm for lunch at 1pm. Transport can be arranged in the village by phoning Christine on 01944 711294.

Coffee morning - The United coffee morning in the chapel hall raised £242.80 for Christian Aid. Anyone still want to donate should just leave their envelope at the next coffee morning. Helpers were Judith Ruston, Kim Canterbury, Liz Aconley and Christine Fenwick. The winner of the competition was Barbara Grice. The organisers wish to thank everyone who donated cakes and supported the event.

Methodist news – The free family film club, organised by Chris and Sandra Cade, meets on the third Saturday in the month. A small charge to cover costs is made for the tuck shop. Children aged under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. The Sunday morning worship was led by Margaret Crofts whose recent trip to Berlin inspired her talk for Trinity Sunday. The welcomer was Christine Pickard and Ray Pickard was the offertory steward. Jean Brown was the steward and the organist was Chris Cade. The lesson was read by Liz Aconley and Frank Crofts prepared the audio visual equipment. After worship, coffee was enjoyed in the hall. The service on Sunday at 10.30am will be led by the worship leaders.

The Big Lunch - The Big Lunch is a very simple idea from the Eden Project. The aim is to get as many people as possible across the whole of the UK to have lunch with their neighbours annually in June in a simple act of community, friendship and fun. This year’s Big Lunch takes place on Sunday, June 12 and the village is planning its own lunch at the Primary School from 12.30pm to 2.30pm. It is also an opportunity to celebrate our Queen’s 90th birthday. Each village organisation and business is invited to set up a stand to show just what its organisation does and put an activity if it wishes, but no fundraising as this a free event. Take a savoury picnic to share and a rug, or picnic chairs, to sit on, but do not take glass bottles or alcohol. There will be cake.

THORNTON-LE-DALE Ladies Group - Members of the Ladies Group, known in its early years as the Young Wives, joined worshippers at St George’s Church, Wilton, on Sunday, May 8, to celebrate its 40th anniversary. The service was conducted by the Rev Dr Jo White and the sermon given by the Rev Jacki Gray. After the service, a celebration cake, made by Joyce Nellis, and cut by founder member Pat Kendall, was served and photographs taken. A vote of thanks was given to all who helped to organise the occasion. Names were taken at the monthly meeting of those wishing to go to the concert on Thursday, June 23 and a letter read from Thornton Dale Players inviting participants for a Who’s Got Talent show. The Rev Mark Brosnan gave a talk about his life experiences that finally led him to be vicar of Kirkbymoorside. After university, he spent time in Lesotho working alongside monks to build and enhance community life. He then qualified as a psychiatric nurse and undertook work in various fields of that profession before training to be a priest. Heather Chaplin thanked him for his talk. He answered questions while tea and biscuits were served.

Bridge club - The duplicate competition held on Monday, May 1 was won by Barry Smith and Bob Wardell with 69 per cent. In second place were Bob and Gladys Thompson with 67.5 per cent.

Anniversary - Thornton Dale Chapel’s anniversary is on Saturday, June 4 when Weighton Waites Choir will give a concert in chapel. Supper will follow and a collection will be taken for chapel funds. The anniversary service at 10.30am on Sunday, June 5 will be led by Rev Tanya Short.

WOMBLETON Domino drives - There will be a domino drives in the village hall on Saturday and on Wednesday, June 1. Both start at 7.30pm and are to raise funds for the hall.
