YORK is enjoying 'jobs galore' as employment booms and a constant flow of employers seeks to recruit new staff, according to a Jobcentre boss.

Sara Farrar was speaking as the latest labour market statistics revealed there are 85 fewer benefits claimants in the City of York Council area than a year ago.

She said the number of claimants had fallen to 940 last month, down by eight per cent on the 1,025 claimants in the same month last year and by 76 per cent on the 2010 figure.

"Locally in York it’s jobs galore," said Ms Farrar, who is recruitment & partnership manager at Selby, York and Ryedale Jobcentres. "The Jobcentre has hosted and supported a constant flow of employers busy recruiting this month."

She said it had helped PMP Recruitment fill vacancies at Tangerine Confectionery on York's outskirts and Park Inn by Radisson recruit staff, and Skosh independent restaurant would be in the Jobcentre today recruiting for a range of back of house roles.

She also revealed that a hospitality Job-Shop event was being planned between 10am and 12pm on June 13 at Monkgate Jobcentre in direct response to increasing demand from employers, with between 12 and 15 employers set to be present.

"The Jobcentre is buzzing," she said. "It’s great news for Jobseekers and great news for the city, reflecting the prosperity of the York economy. It’s a really exciting time to be looking for work in York."

She added that in Ryedale, the number of claimants had fallen by five in the past year to 265, while in the Selby district the number had fallen by 60 to 740.

In Yorkshire and the Humber, the number of people in work had risen by about 130,000 since 2010, and a near record 2.51 million people were now in employment.
