A DRUMMER whose music inspired Kurt Cobain will be commemorated with an album of cover songs.

Musicians will pay tribute to Kelvin Knight, formerly of Delta 5, by releasing a compilation of the band's songs on Friday.

Cobain's posthumous diaries revealed the Nirvana frontman was a huge fan of Delta 5, which formed in Leeds during the 1970s, and formed a lasting impression on the American.

Mr Knight, 56, from Leeman Road, York, died in December after a long illness but will be remembered as a kind and loyal friend who unearthed rare musical talent through his None More Black (NMB) Management company.

Acts who knew and worked with the drummer have collaborated with the Leeds label Bomb the Twist to release a compilation album.

Members of Leeds band Esper Scout began the project as a way of expressing their gratitude to Kelvin and an unmastered version of it was presented to him at his birthday gig two months before his death.

Curated by Esper Scout's Sarah Statham, mastered by bandmate Abbi Philips, and with artwork by Rebecca Jane, the tracks on the compilation were self-recorded by the contributing artists.

Slack, a member of post-punk band ZoZo, said they recorded Delta 5's Mind your Own Business in an hour "with a broken bass and a dodgy keyboard".

He said: "I tried to make it sound like loops without much actual looping. Each part is just one take in the spirit of the 80s DIY disco punk that has inspired me so much."

A spokeswoman for Bomb the Twist added: "The release also features The Mekons and 80s punks Expelaires among a collection of covers that spans generations and genres, demonstrating the versatility of Delta 5's writing, and underlines the band's popularity and influence since their recording and live activity in the 1980s.

"The compilation aims to celebrate the much loved music of a ground breaking, iconic but arguably under recognised British band, and to capture Kelvin Knight's infectious positive energy, which is proudly reflected in Leeds' active DIY community and its collaborative spirit."
