A SPONSORED walk will take place in York to raise awareness of domestic abuse.

Becca's Walk is open to everyone and will start from Rowntree Park on Saturday at 11am, and has been organised in memory of Rebecca Kowal, who was murdered by her partner after suffering domestic abuse.

The walk has been organised by her brother Andrew Overton, who is now an ambassador for the Independent Domestic Abuse Service (IDAS).

Andrew, from Northallerton, said: "I have lost someone very close to my heart. I set up Becca’s Walk in her memory and to create awareness of the horrors of domestic abuse. We have also set up Becca's Fund to raise money to support children and young people affected by domestic abuse in North Yorkshire.

"I would really love to see as many people, families and children supporting and enjoying the day. If you can’t make the walk but would like to donate at any time, please do so."

Walkers will gather at the Butcher’s Terrace entrance and Lord Mayor Councillor Sonia Crisp will pay remembrance to Rebecca and announce the start of the walk, which heads out towards Millennium Bridge.

A fun day will also take place by the playground in the park, including a child-friendly stroll, a treasure hunt, bouncy castles and a stilt walker from Berzerkaz Circus, circus workshops and giant bubbles.

Registration for Becca's Walk starts in Rowntree Park from 10.30am, and the fun day runs throughout the day.
