SUPPORTERS of a York mental health charity will be putting their best foot forward on a fundraising walk around the city walls.

The walk on Wednesday, June 8 hopes to raise money and awareness for Mainstay, a small charity which supports people living with mental ill health.

Mainstay holds health walks every Wednesday as part of its programme of events, which prompted the idea for a big sponsorship push.

Volunteer Lee Maynard will be part of the group walking the 3.4km route.

He said: "We have been supported by the charity and now we are supporting it. Some of those walking have disabilities and will find it hard, so we are just doing one lap. If it takes four hours, then so be it."

Mr Maynard added: "I tried to take my own life two years ago after losing all my money and benefits.

"I was in a bad situation. Through York Housing Association and Mainstay, I have come a long way. Mainstay gave me the confidence to learn new skills and I'm doing some courses with them.

"Lynn James, the manager, has brought me a long way over the last year and I have decided to give something back.

"I especially enjoy the atmosphere of the walks when everyone is together."

The group hopes the walk will help Mainstay get its message across.

Maureen Clements, another volunteer, said: "We are quite a small charity, so not that many people know about us. We are just trying to raise as much money as possible and raise the profile."

She added: "I have been involved for about three years. After I lost my dad, Lynn helped me with a lot of things to get back on track.

"It was not just dealing with anxiety, it was just getting my feet back on the ground.

"She has been a big help and always goes beyond what she needs to do."
