WIGGINTON Grasshoppers recorded two league wins in three days to move to within two points of claiming the York Sunday Morning League division one title for the second successive season.

On Sunday, Grasshoppers faced an under-strength Quakerwood side and made light work of them in the first half, assuming a 7-0 lead at the interval through goals from Jamie Green (2), Steve Jarvis (2), Tom Metcalfe, Neale Holmes and Jamie Willstrop.

To make matters worse for the away side, they had been reduced to ten men following a red card after 25 minutes.

The second period was much more even, with Quakerwood proving resilient foes.

Alex Day and Nick McBride managed to get on the scoresheet for the away side but Wigginton saw out the win with four more goals, Green completing his hat-trick to add to goals from Josh Luckhurst, Tom Coates and Terry Taylor resulting in an 11-2 win.

Tuesday night saw ‘Hoppers visit Dunnington and they were soon in front, Josh Luckhurst stroking home a penalty after three minutes.

Tom Derbyshire then made it 2-0 seven minutes later but Jonny Andrew restored hope for the home side making it 2-1 after half an hour.

There were no further goals until the 60th minute, but after that the floodgates opened with Wiggy running out 7-1 winners.

Jamie Green (2), John Cavanagh and Matt Tiplady all bagged but the pick of the second-half goals was a clinically-finished 25 yard effort from Luckhurst.

Bubwith White Swan defeated York Nomads 6-2, largely thanks to two spectacular efforts from player-manager Rob Joy. Butterfield (2), Whitlam and Nicholson also found the net with Liam Flanagan hitting both of Nomads’ goals.

In division two, Cliffe now just need four points from five games to be certain of finishing as league champions.

Tom Hogg hit a hat-trick to fire his side to a winning position with Nathan Parker adding a fourth in a 4-3 over Marcia Bishopthorpe.

Their task was made much easier by Selby Olympia, who beat current league leaders NUR 5-1 on Tuesday night to ensure that they could move no further clear, a disappointing finale to a very competitive season for the NUR.

Stu Clark’s headed goal and a penalty save by Jamie Ward were the only positives for the visitors as the Selby side powered clear on the night.

Olympia had already provided a similar blow to second-placed Brayton who went down 4-3 to their rivals on Sunday in their final game.

Paul Tiffany had given Brayton the lead after 30 minutes but had then slammed a penalty against the post shortly before the break, leaving Olympia still in the game at 1-0 down.

The hosts equalised after the restart through Sam McAllister before Tiffany converted a Rob Guest corner to make it 2-1.

Dave Whisker then headed the hosts level once again before a powerful drive from Tiffany completed his hat-trick and gave his side the lead for the third time in the match.

Not to be outdone, McAllister levelled the scores and completed his own treble in the last minute, dispatching a pinpoint free-kick over the Brayton wall to win the match.

Thorpe United completed their league season with a 4-2 win over York Medics. Shaun Gandy put them ahead early on before Phil Newstead doubled the lead after being put clear by Gandy.

The home side then moved 3-0 ahead with Gandy completing his brace before Medics pulled a goal back through Leo Wotton with 40 minutes played.

Matthew Harker then made it 4-1 at the interval with only a solitary Medics goal being scored in the second period, Daniel McNorton finding the target.

Haxby United defeated Besswing 4-3 as division two finished with a fulrry of goals.

Burnett bagged a brace for the home side with Tom Maskell and Will Plews also finding the net. Craig Atkin (2) and Nick Horne hit Beeswing’s replies.
