CYCLING fever has gripped pupils at a North Yorkshire primary school with the help of a local housebuilder.

With the Tour de Yorkshire passing through Sherburn-in-Elmet, Redrow Homes treated Key Stage 2 pupils at Athelstan Community Primary School to a day of cycling-related fun and educational activities.

The housebuilder paid for Bikeability cycle training company CycleLeeds to provide a range of workshops for around 125 pupils.

They enjoyed a bike obstacle course, cycling games, race training and a bike fix challenge.

The school also planned a complementary range of lessons to bring the tour into various subjects including maths, geography, science and art.

Year 3 teacher James Tucker said: “We are very grateful for Redrow’s generosity and enthusiasm to organise the cycle event taking place at Athelstan.

"The Tour de Yorkshire passing through Sherburn-in-Elmet was an exciting event, and thanks to Redrow we were able to mark the occasion in an equally exciting way."

Redrow marketing co-ordinator Rebecca Cliff said: “Our Saxon Gardens development, off Low Street, has only recently launched and our new show homes have just opened.

"Because we’re offering a range of family friendly homes we thought what better way to celebrate than with one of the local schools.

“And when we realised that the Tour de Yorkshire would be coming right past our development we thought it would be great to combine both things and offer to fund an activities day that would get all the pupils behind it. We certainly had fun and we hope they did too!”
